the end of the future unit....five paragraph essay

ENG 4C1 Future Unit Culminating Task What: A five paragraph essay Topic: General: The Future (see sub-topics) Form: A five paragraph persuasive essay in which you organize your thoughts and come to some conclusions about where we are heading in a particular area (unlike the Of Mice and Men essay, this is an informal piece and “I” is acceptable Some possible choices (and sub-points): The Future and Transportation - Electric cars - Driverless cars - Hybrid cars The Future and Energy Sources - Fracking - Solar Power - Wind Power The Future and Inter-Personal Relationships - Diminishing social skills - Facebook-produced anxiety/unhappiness - Interpersonal nature of apps such as Tinder The Future and Hockey - Impact of concussion - The impact of CTE - The impact of analytics The Future and International Relations/Warfare - Drones - Germ warfare - Space weaponry Ideally pick a topic you are interested in and write a five paragraph essay with a clear thesis (“will change a great deal”’ “will make society better”, will make society worse” etc) and well-chosen, supporting points ….and follow the example! The Changing Face of Education Education will change a great deal in the near future. While it is fair to say that education has not changed a great deal over the past few decades, all that will change in the near future. A large number of outside pressures will bring about tremendous changes in the education system as we know it. Firstly, technology will be incorporated into the education system to a much greater degree than it is now. The concept of the classroom will also change a great deal as will the definition and job description of a teacher. These changes are inevitable and many would say that they are necessary. The education system as we know it will look very different in the near future. The first major change that the future will bring to the education system will be an increasing dependency on technology itself. Less and less ‘work” will be done by hand and in writing and more and more will be done using technology. From smartboards to chromebooks to storage in the cloud, the education system will be increasingly digital. The old of paper and pen or pencil and hard copy documents will become a thing of the past. Students will be taught using technology, will devise and produce using technology, will share using technology and will story their work using technology. All that will be needed will be an internet connection, a digital means of production and storage capabilities. The days of backpacks and textbooks will be long gone as technology changes the education system in the near future. The second major change will be in the idea of the classroom. At the moment, students follow timetables and schedules and move from room to room in a building. That is a means of delivery which will be out-of-date in the near future. The modern world requires on-the-go, adaptable learners in a way the old system cannot provide. It simply is not and will not be efficient to have students learn in a single room, with all of the limitations that come with that. Having students sit in a single, assigned space for a specific period of time is limiting and does not meet the needs of future learners and employees. Learning will happen wherever technology is available and in the future, there will be much more online learning, whether that is at home or in some other location. How we view and regard “classrooms” will change a great deal in the future. Finally, the concept of the teacher will also change a great deal for many reasons. The idea of a single person who is expert in a subject area who shares information on that subject to a group of people for a specific period of time will be under threat. Financial pressures and the demands of the new economy will change the concept of what a teacher does. No longer will he or she simply stand in front of a room and impart knowledge. More and more students will learn remotely and will have access to infinitely more information than any single person. Perhaps the teacher will become more of an organizer or a facilitator, but what is clear is that the role will change. Students will need to be flexible, self-directed learners in the future and the idea of a sponge who simply soaks up knowledge simply won’t do in the future. If students and the classroom must change, then it stands to reason that the teacher must also. The world has changed a great deal in the last few decades. It could be argued that the education system has not kept pace. That is sure to change in the near future. Technology will alter everything about the educational experience and our definitions of classroom and teacher will change also. Powerful forces are re-shaping everything in society and education will be no different. The world outside the school is altered completely and, soon, the education system will be similarly affected. The education system of the past which created workers for assembly lines will be replaced by a system to meet the needs of the 21st century and beyond.
